Reading through 1st and 2nd
Timothy a lot of questions formed, but were not blog worthy questions. I did
find these two letters quite interesting considering all that they contained. One
particular question that stuck out while reading was the subject of
childbearing. In 1st timothy the following was mentioned: “Yet she
will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness,
with self-control.” What on earth does that mean? Does that mean every woman
who bears children is “saved”, I know plenty of women who have children but are
in no way “saved” women. So the question that I plan on finding out is what
role does childbearing play in women’s salvation?
I found a lot of good sites to formulate my answer around. That always makes for an interesting blog I believe. The following website https://www.christiancourier.com/articles/539-what-role-does-child-bearing-play-in-womans-salvation stated an opinion that I can absolutely agree with. The following was said on the website: “It does not affirm that the act of “child-bearing” is a personal requisite for a female to be saved. If such were the case, single ladies, along with those who are unable to bear children, would be beyond the pale of redemption — a conclusion that is absurd. Such a circumstance, in many cases would place redemption outside the scope of individual choice — which is not a biblical option.
Additionally, the text does not affirm that any woman who bears a child will be saved. There are clearly defined conditions preliminary to being saved (Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Rom. 6:3-4; Gal. 3:26-27; 1 Pet. 3:21), and having a child is never listed among them.
It does make sense that there is more to being saved, and I have learned that a lot of time people tend to misconstrue the meaning of this text. I could be believed that this verse is figure of speech, but that is not the question at hand. The second site that I looked up had a great interpretation of the text: “The most likely interpretation that takes into account the immediate context is that, rather than abandoning their intended roles by demanding teaching and authoritative positions in the church, women will find true fulfillment through childbearing. Paul is saying God calls women to be faithful, helpful wives, raising children to love and worship God and managing the household wisely (1 Timothy 5:14; Titus 2:3–5). http://www.gotquestions.org/saved-childbearing.html
I find this sites interpretation of the verse to be accurate. Many times in scripture like I mentioned before can be misinterpreted for their true meaning. Fulfillment of childbearing does bring a sense of fulfillment to women or so I have been told. It takes more than simply bearing a child to be considered “saved”, but from a Christian perspective women’s role in salvation involves many things outside of childbearing, but like the site says it does bring fulfillment. I believe the verse was used as figure of speech not in a literal sense that having a child guarantees salvation, and if that were the case women who profess to have found salvation without bearing a child would not be true Christians which is absurd. This verse is all about how you look at things and what perspective you view things from.
